The pipette is typically used in conjunction with a pipet-aid or pipette controller, which aids in the aspiration (drawing up) and dispensing (releasing) of liquids. This tool is essential in various laboratory applications, including cell culture, reagent preparation, and chemical analysis, due to its accuracy and ease of use.

How to use a serological pipette

The serological pipettes often utilize a pipette controller, which aids in transferring liquids by creating a controlled vacuum. This controller is versatile, accommodating different sizes of serological pipettes to ensure precise volume transfer. Follow the below steps to use a serological pipette with a pipette controller:

  1. Select a serological pipette that matches the volume of liquid you need to transfer (ranging from less than 1 mL to up to 50 mL).
  2. Secure the pipette filler onto the top of the serological pipette. This device helps to draw and dispense liquid safely and accurately.
  3. Draw a small amount of liquid into the pipette to remove any air bubbles. Ensure the liquid level is slightly above the desired volume mark.
  4. Insert the pipette tip into the liquid you intend to transfer.
  5. Use the pipette filler to gently draw the liquid up into the pipette, ensuring the liquid level is above the target volume.
  6. Adjust the liquid level to the exact volume needed by carefully releasing any excess liquid back into the original container until the liquid level matches the desired volume mark.
  7. Position the pipette tip over the receiving vessel.
  8. Gently press the pipette filler to release the liquid steadily into the receiving container. Ensure complete transfer by allowing all liquid to drain from the pipette tip.
  9. After dispensing the liquid, release the pipette filler slowly to avoid splashing.
  10. If using a disposable pipette, discard it according to your laboratory’s waste disposal guidelines.
  11. If using a reusable glass pipette, clean it thoroughly with appropriate cleaning solutions and allow it to dry before storage.
