What is a Pipette?

Single channel and multi channel Pipette

A pipette is a common laboratory instrument used to measure small amounts of liquids with a volume range between 1 and 1000µl. A pipette is also used to transfer a precise amount of fluid from one container to another. 

Pipettes are generally used in microbiology,  chemistry, medical, and soil testing laboratories for the precise transfer of different liquid samples. While the single-channel pipettes are used in labs that perform research related to molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, cell culture, analytical chemistry, biochemistry and genetics, the multichannel pipettes are recommended for ELISA (diagnostic test), molecular screening, kinetic studies and DNA amplification.

The working principle of the pipette is mainly based on two mechanisms: 1) the Air Displacement Method and 2) the Positive Displacement Method. Each type of pipette has a piston that moves within a capillary or cylinder. Air displacement pipettes leave a specific amount of air between the piston and the liquid. Positive displacement pipetting involves the piston making direct contact with the fluid.
